6 recommendations while experimenting with cannabis
Product shown is the Sex Salve from Portland company Oshihana
Experimentation leads to new discoveries and there’s plenty to discover in the world of cannabis. In Portland where I live and where it’s legal for adult use it’s not unusual to receive a variety samples to test out and experiment with. I’ve been able to deepen my experiences with cannabis that’s lighter in THC content since I’ve started to tune into my body more. The following recommendations are from my notes I’ve taken along the way.
1.
Mindfully drop expectations
This helps to clear your mind of any guesses that may or may not end up being true. Understand what the intended usage for the product is before you begin. Remain open to your experience with it.
2.
Examine the product very closely
Examine the packaging, labels and the actual product itself. What is the dosage amount? Take note of what the label displays as a single dosage. Start there. With any type of medicine we would check our dosage. Also, what are all of the other ingredients? Decide how much you’re going to try each time and stay consistent while you’re in testing mode.
3.
Engage your sense of smell
Most of us are familiar with aromatherapy. Terpenes are the aromatic compounds found in plants and are abundant in cannabis. Inhaling the scents from some plants and essential oils may affect a person’s mood and stress levels. Do you like the smell? What does it smell like? Does the smell seem to bring calm or energize you?
4.
Consider your baseline
Testing a cannabis-infused product for the first time (or any time) will undoubtedly be impacted by your baseline. Your baseline is how you feel before trying anything. Layering THC, CBD, alcohol, nicotine, or any other psychoactive compound can have an impact on your experience. So, to get the best understanding of the product, test sober! Be as aware and present in your experience as possible.
5.
Meditative Body Scan
Meditation brings presence and awareness. Allow yourself to relax and feel your body. Cannabis is a beautiful assist when it comes to tuning into the inner world. Drop into your body so you can feel how each part of your body feels before, during and after testing the same product. Sense the feelings inside your feet. Slowly move your attention up your body. How does your body feel? How does your body feel after trying the product compared to before? How do you feel emotionally?
6.
Consider consulting a Naturopathic Physician
‘Considering’ is one thing and affording it is another. But it’s worth working towards. Since Naturopathic Physicians are holistic doctors, they have the same doctorate years of education and training as traditional medical doctors but their education extends to working with plants as medicine. This is something traditional or Western physicians do not typically spend time learning. ND’s work with your unique physiology by way of blood tests. They can help you find the right type and dosage of cannabis that works best for you. They’ll consider your therapeutic history and can monitor changes as you go along. This might be the best route if you’re interested in getting the most out of your money in the long run, versus buying + testing new and different products over and over not knowing how they’re really working.
